Harsh Realm (television series)

Created by Chris Carter (creator of the X-Files), Harsh Realm (200?) was a tv show that lasted less then a full season. The show was centered around Thomas Hobes, a former soldier who had been deceived into participating in a Virtual Reality combat simulation. Unbeknownst to him, the game had been taken over by one of its participants: former Sergeant Major, and now self styled General, Omar Santiago.

The virtual world itself had been conceived to be an exact copy of our own world but a catastrophic terrorist event had been program into it so has to allow players to experience the aftermath of a complete breakdown in civilian government.

Although the world was supposed to be identical to our own for some reasons, when a character dies, he would simply disapear. You would think it would make the other characters wonder as to why there were all those cemeteries around....

Santiago City

Santiago City is the name given to the area directly under control of Santiago's army. It continuously expends by absorbing new lands and then building fences to surround and join them with the previously occupied land.

From what has been seen, the city is a very orderly place with its citizens (those who toe the line anyway) receiving pretty much every services one could wants. Unsurprisingly, its ruler is General Santiago (there is a bit of Santiago worship going in the city).

  Flag

Description: The central emblem is composed of two crossed swords over a red and black field behind which are 2 golden bars all on a dark red field.

Note: Crossed swords is a pretty common symbols in military regalia which would make sense considering the origin of the city's government.

Comments: As far as I know, the flag is not meant to be reminiscent of anything specific (such as a given regime or country).

· Field Dress:

Description: Santiago's forces normaly wear the same field dress composed of the following:

  • # 1: A greenish khaki combat uniform worn over a t-shirt with a dark red beret and black boots. The wearer's last name is sown in black above the right breast pocket on a strip of cloth. both this strip and the t-shirt are in a slighty more brownish shade of khaki they the rest.
  • # 2: A cloth patch with machine sown emblem worn on the upper left arm.
  • # 3: An enamel metal pin worn on the beret.

Soldiers wear on their lapels embroided or metalic rank insignias identical to the current USA ones although always in their subdued form (silver is shown as black, gold as orangy-brown).

Note: A few characters have been shown as wearing camouflage clothing instead but this is not too surprising considering most modern armies have more then one type of field dress depending on the environment in which they serve.

Comments: As far as I could tell, the field dress also serves has their everyday clothes. In other words, they do not seem to have spiffier looking clothes for parades and ceremonies. This could be a sign that for all his demagoguery, Santiago does not care too much about the flashier aspect of power.
