As I mentioned on the "canon" page regarding firefly (see here), there doesn't seem to be any sort of real way to tell the difference between any alliance ranks beside "in command/not in command".
To give a bit more diversity without getting away too much from whata onscreen, I have followed the idea that the Alliance forces are a unified entity. This mean among other things that although divided into various arms, they have a pay/responsibility chart which is the same across all of them. A given rank then represent *relative* levels between 2 hierachies so that a "Police Sergeant" might command a few dozens of man while the Allied Fleet Commander could be in charge of hundreds of them. Just think of the fact that in the US, a police chief (who could be in charge of no more then a dozen men) wear the same insignias as an army general.
I have divided the chart in 4 stricly based on rank mentioned and some incidental comments. From my point of views, the branches represent roughly: space navy/coast guard-type (Allied Fleet), Customs/FBI/DEA-type (Allied Enforcement), shock troops (Federal Marshals) & law enforcement for inner planet (Police)
While the following rank chart is purely speculative, I have tried, using mighty twisted reasoning, to keep it in line with onscreen and end credits occurences. Many holes have been filled drawing inspiration from Chinese ranks past and present.

| This is the "Soft look" uniform. It would
be worn in office setting and/or for work that require a less
militarised touch (such as public relation).
Officers do not wear a throat disk with this level of dress although some, especialy those with law enforcement powers, may carry around a badge of office in their pocket.
